Fabric Painting

Independent STudy:

Fabric Painting

For my silk sample, I learned that with silk paint I'm able to achieve a high level of detail with or without the addition of the noflo medium, but the vibrancy will vary. Acid Dye is a bit too thick of a mixture and doesn't want to be as beautiful as it could be and interacts with the hand of the fabric strangely. I tried 2 different mediums (gac 900 and liquitex fabric medium) for my fabric medium and acrylic section with varying degree's or success. Gac 900 proves to be much more affective than the liquitex, but the ratios (1:1, 1:2,1:3) will lighten the color of the paint and make the application more translucent. The Liquitex medium sucks for silk. It's too thick and makes fine detail and brush strokes a pain, even when different ratios are used (1:1, 1:2) it still sucks.

For my cotton sample the fabric medium (gac900) sits very heavy on the fabric, but still has a good color payoff. The silk paint sample led to the most delicate little painting, but the no flo versus nothing side didn't really change? I enjoyed how the acid dye worked, but I think the color pay off could be better (this problem might have been just a personal issue). For the batik section I used both just a paintbrush and a tjanting, the brush I had more control of but I got better results with the wax using the tjanting (the control problem was most likely a user error)

The Spandex sample had some fantastic work and texture. I personally prefer the way the acid dye looks, it had the texture and control I needed. Unfortunately the silk paint had some fantastic color pay off, but it did not like staying in one place. If I was using it for a project in the future it would have to be for a less detailed project.
